Three men, one of whom was armed with a long barrelled weapon, entered the property in the North Circular Road area on Sunday night at around 10.55pm.

The pensioner was tied up in an upstairs bedroom. His son, aged in his 20s, who was also upstairs, was tied up, assaulted by the butt of the firearm and tasered during the incident.

"The occupants, although not seriously injured during the incident are believed to have been left very badly shaken," a police spokesperson said.

The gang made off in the family's black BMW 318 car with a sum of money and a quantity of jewellery.

The car was last seen heading in the direction of the Springfield Road toward the Monagh bypass area of west Belfast.

SDLP North Belfast Councillor Patrick Convery described the break-in as "cruel and vicious."

"There is no excuse for this type of callous attack," said the chair of the North Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership.

"The use of firearms, axes and a stun gun is particularly chilling. It is imperative that police act quickly to apprehend these dangerous, reckless criminals before someone else is hurt.

"One of the biggest issues in this community is fear of crime. This incident will have only increased that anxiety among residents. I would encourage anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to report it to the PSNI at Antrim Road police station and help bring this gang to justice."

North Belfast DUP MLA Nelson McCausland has also appealed for full co-operation with the police.

"This was a particularly vicious, nasty and brutal aggravated burglary. Those responsible have caused physical injury to innocent people in pursuit of their selfish criminal gain.

"This innocent family have been put through a terrifying and traumatic ordeal. The entire community is outraged and disgusted by this crime and is unified in calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice."

Sinn Féin councillor Mary Ellen Campbell said that anyone with any information, no matter how small, needs to come forward as soon as possible.

"The whole community will be deeply alarmed at hearing of this incident and the reported level of violence involved. I'm urging residents to take all sensible measures to secure your homes and help reduce the chance of becoming a victim of such despicable crimes.

"Thankfully incidents like this are rare and people shouldn't be living in fear. However, clearly those responsible must be apprehended as soon as possible and held to account for this attack."

Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the aggravated burglary or noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time to come forward.

Ray in Belfast. Don't bring Twaddell Ave into this. Also, are you living in a different place than I am? Reference "Let the police get back to what their good at - catching criminals" This is Northern Ireland mate. PSNI don't catch criminals. Will be a first if I read about it.
