A 24-year-old man has been targeted in a paramilitary-style shooting in Ardoyne close to where a community festival was taking place on Sunday.

The shooting was reported in the Flax Street area of north Belfast just before 10.55pm.

The man, who was shot in the legs, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not life-threatening.

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said that people in Ardoyne are horrified and disgusted at the shooting.

"This young man was shot only yards from the entrance to the venue of the Ardoyne Fleadh where thousands of people have gathered to enjoy the last night of the festivities," she said.

"This was a cowardly and despicable attack and local people are also horrified that it was carried out in full view of children who were going to the festival.

"The thugs who carried out this attack represent no one. They should immediately end their campaign of violence and threats against the people of Ardoyne.

"Anyone who has any information on this attack should bring it to the police."

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid said: "I would ask anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact CID at Tennent Street Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Michael in Templepatrick------read my first post again and tell me where I specified S Fein only? When I said our political arena is awash with people who had been just like these thugs I didn't say S Fein. THAT'S YOUR OWN CONCLUSION so it MUST be true. I actually said gunmen and murderers from BOTH sides appeased. Maybe you are right though I never stopped to count [condemning both sides equally] but as you assumed I was referring ONLY to S Fein as ex thugs I think there probably are more 'republican' ex 'combatants' representing the decent people of N Ireland. IS THAT A BIGOTED ENOUGH LITTLE SPEECH FOR YOU??? Ask your protestant 'friends'.

Jack in Belfast, well the very fact that there are 1 million things to cancel the other out pretty much says it all.

Lucy just be honest about it, as per usual with you, your criticism was ALL about sinn fein with a meagre mention of your own side at a veiled attempt at impartiality. It's fooling no one, well no one with a brain at least. You're not alone though, there are a number of self confessed "non bigots" who post if! Btw if i'm a bigot then so are 95% of those who post ....Hypocrisy is all it is.

The day Michael in Templepatrick shows some balance to his comments......well thats just being silly as it'll never happen. More chance of witnessing pigs flying over a frozen hell.

Michael in Templepatrick---Your reply to DM saying you were 'providing some balance too' with that post targeting only B Hutchinson shows just how totally 'UNbalanced' you are!! Because I included SF in my criticism you obviously thought your comment to me re him would be Mannoying to me because you have put me into the category of prod/loyalist----frankly Michael WHATEVER floats your boat. Basically ,by reading your posts you come across as a bigot who can only condemn the sectarian trash that can be espoused by loyalism and find excuses for or support the same type of sectarian trash espoused by republicanism. You're not a 'shared future' kind of guy are you?
