A 32-year-old man has been shot in both legs in a paramilitary-style attack in Londonderry's Waterside.

The incident happened in the Lincoln Court area at around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

The man was taken to hospital for his injuries which police described as not life-threatening.

Loyalist paramilitaries are being blamed locally for carrying out the gun attack.

Willie Hay, DUP MLA for Foyle, said the man, who is from the area, was asked to go to the children's playpark at Rossdowney.

"There he was shot in both legs.

"One had to condemn it and quite obviously, this was a well planned shooting."

Police have appealed for information and can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101.

re: North Belfast, I live in a loyalist area in belfast and I can assure you that its not as easy as just "growing a set". These scum have beaten, intimidated and shot there own community for decades. Speak out and you and your whole family are in for the same, if not worse! Its like Nazi Germany. No right minded person in my area, and I'm sure Londonderry, support these scum! The police have alot to answer for. They know every guy in charge of each cell of these "soldiers", why are the ringleaders not charged with directing terrorism? PSNI need to dismantle these mobsters NOW!

These people are judge and jury and carry out their punishment on people and have support in the communities that glorify these paramilitaries by putting up murals and naming parks after them this is the society the troubles has created
