The victim has been named locally as Peter Butterly from Cortown in Dunleer, Co Louth, in his late 30s.

He was gunned down in the car park of the Huntsman Pub in Gormanstown, Co Meath, at around 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí have confirmed a man drove into the car park, close to the M1 motorway between Dublin and Belfast, shortly after 2pm in a Renault Laguna.

A second car entered the car park a few minutes later.

The man was confronted by the occupants of the second car as he walked across the car park and was shot a number of times. The assailants fled the scene in the car.

The car was intercepted by Gardaí on the Balscadden Road a short time later.

Four men in their 20s were arrested- a handgun was recovered and the car was seized.

A fifth man aged in his 40s was also arrested near to the scene a short time later.

The men are currently detained at a number of north Dublin Garda Stations under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

It is believed Gardaí are investigating whether the father-of-three was targeted as part of a dispute between dissident republicans.

The victim is believed to have previously appeared before the non-jury Special Criminal Court last year accused of membership of the Real IRA.

He was arrested by Gardaí during a series of raids in counties Louth, Wexford and Waterford alongside a number of other people.

Guns, ammo and bomb-making equipment were recovered at the time.

The man denied membership of an unlawful organisation but the case against him collapsed because a Supreme Court ruling had rendered the warrant used for his arrest unconstitutional.

A preliminary examination has been carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist and a full forensic and technical examination of the scene is currently underway.

A post mortem examination is due to take place on Thursday.

Gardaí have said a number of people have come forward to assist in this investigation and they are continuing to appeal for information.
