He has been named locally as Patrick McCreesh, known as Patsy, from the Meigh area.

He died in the collision between a Vauxhall Vectra car and an articulated Volvo lorry.

The incident happened on the Forkhill Road, Meigh, before 7pm on Friday.

MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley expressed his shock and sadness at the news of the death.

The SDLP representative said Mr McCreesh was "a man of deep faith, and was very well liked in the local community for his pleasant and friendly disposition".

He added: "I am shocked and saddened by the news another person has lost their life on our roads here in south Armagh within the space of just over a week.

"My immediate thoughts are with the family of the deceased and, on behalf of the community, I extend my deepest sympathy to them.

"The last few weeks have brought great sadness to many homes due to road traffic accidents and I would like to underline the message given by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan that we all must exercise the utmost caution at all times on our roads."

Police have issued an appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

The Newry Road has reopened following the collision.

Something serious needs to be done about road safety. Speed cameras constantly on the A1 at Banbridge and Dromore on what are now, practically the safest stretches of road in the north since the flyovers where put in. We need more of the distance speed cameras like they have on the Belfast to Bangor Road. Since they have been erected only a handful of motorists have been caught speeding. That's how success should be measured.
