Patrick Nalty, from Clara Hill in Kilrea, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Monday.
He is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
During a police interview he admitted being in the area at the time of the assault and striking the victim John Wu across the face before running away, the court heard.
The accused did not enter a plea in court and was released on bail to appear in court next month.
Two men, aged 20 and 24, and a woman, aged 19, also arrested in connection to the incident have been released on police bail.
Dr Wu, 44, was punched and kicked by a gang of four men and a woman in the Long Commons area of the Co Londonderry town last Tuesday night.
He was in his kitchen with his wife and three-year-old daughter when they heard a commotion and the sound of breaking glass at the front of the property.
He went to investigate and upon confronting the gang, he was attacked.
He was found badly injured by his wife Ruoyin Luo.
