Appearing in the dock of Belfast Magistrates' Court, with a visible wound on the left-hand side of his neck, 41-year-old Craig Binnie confirmed that he understood the five charges against him.

Binnie, originally from Scotland but now with an address at Tynan Drive in Newtownabbey, is accused of the attempted murders of pensioner Samuel Gaynor and three women, Lisa Donaghy, Angela Bell and Nancy McDowell on 30 December.

He is further accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, against Robert McDowell on the same date.

The charges arose after paramedics were called to the scene of what was described as a "frenzied attack" at two neighbouring homes in Ballyduff Gardens, Newtownabbey, at around 4pm last Monday.

The five people and allegedly the defendant himself were seriously injured following the incident.

At the time, John McPoland from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said: "There were two people seriously enough injured for our crews to ask that the medical people be waiting for them on arrival [at hospital].

"There are stab injuries all over different parts of their body, including the chest, back and groin, so it looks like some kind of frenzied attack."

On Saturday, a detective constable told the court she believed she could connect Binnie to each of the five charges against him.

No bail application was lodged on his behalf and District Judge Harry McKibbin remanded Binnie into custody to appear again on 10 January via the videolink system.
