Man charged with Ballymena murder

A 41-year-old man has been charged with murdering a woman in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

Denise Dunlop, who was 32, was killed at a house in Centuripe Avenue in the early hours of Sunday.The accused, who was arrested by detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch, is due before Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Monday.The murder charge will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service as is normal procedure.Declan O'Loan from the SDLP said local people are shocked following the "tragic" news."It's shocking news for all of us in Ballymena and I want to express my sympathy to the family who will obviously be heartbroken," he told UTV."This is in a group of houses that are known locally as the 'army houses', the army barracks closed down some years ago and these houses were given over to the housing association and done up."It's a lovely and quiet area on the edge of the town centre so this will come as a huge surprise and shock to immediate residents and indeed to the whole community."Daithí McKay, Sinn Féin MLA, said: "The community here are shocked at what has taken place in an otherwise quiet part of the town."People's thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young woman at this difficult time."Jim Allister, TUV leader and local MLA, said: "I share the sense of shock at the violent death which took place in the quiet Demesne Estate in Ballymena."I trust all with information relevant to this murder will come forward to help the police inquiry."Police carrying out door to door enquiries at street where murder happened in Ballymena— Aideen Kennedy (@Aideen_UTV) June 15, 2014
