He was detained by officers after members of the public reported someone damaging cars in the Ballygomartin Road area at around 6am on Sunday.

At least 31 vehicles had wing mirrors kicked off and some had number plates broken.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, is currently in police custody.

Local DUP councillor Nicola Verner condemned the attacks.

"This serves no purpose at all other than hitting hard on the pockets of local people," she said.

Police investigating this incident are asking any witnesses or owners of any damaged vehicles who have not come forward yet to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.

No motive for these attacks? This area is geographically in West Belfast, but electorally it's in Belfast North.

@joe90 in North Belfast it is a sad state of affairs when you seem to be more concerned about your beloved north Belfast being tarnished than you are about this disgraceful act of vandalism !!I would go as far to say that people who live in west and north Belfast know exactly where the places are to go and not go, and I`m sure they don`t need the media to tell them!!

he should be made to pay for the damage he did to these cars, if he does not pay up he should get at least two years in jail, I bet he gets probation or some other non custodial sentence? watch this space.

Joe90 I agree, its such poor reporting. I can't believe they don't know the difference between north and west. And as for the scum who damaged cars, I hope he gets the proper punishment he deserves. I bet he doesn't own anything as valuable as a car himself and therefore will have no idea how unfair it is to go and spend HARD EARNED (ie not scrounged) money trying to get it fixed.
