The discovery was made on Monday by an on-site contractor for NI Water at the Park Road junction, where a one-lane system had currently been operating under temporary traffic signals.
"Emergency work will now be undertaken by NI Water to ensure the road is structurally sound," a spokeswoman for the Department for Regional Development.
"It will therefore be necessary to close the Ravenhill Road completely for the safety of the road users."
With efforts to make necessary repairs as quickly as possible underway, DRD is estimating that the work will be completed on Tuesday.
"But, until then, traffic will be diverted onto the Ormeau Road at the Rosetta roundabout (city bound) and the Ormeau Embankment (country bound), with the Ravenhill Road fully closed between Ravenhill Park and South Parade," the spokeswoman added.
"We understand that this will cause disruption and ask motorists to be patient while these vital repairs are completed."
