Army bomb squad officers examined a suspicious object in Rosebery Gardens.
Roads in the area were closed for a time but have since been reopened.
Earlier, a separate alert in the North Queen Street area of north Belfast led to the road being closed for a time and residents evacuated from their homes.
The army was called to the scene but it also turned out to be a hoax.
Meanwhile in Newtownabbey, a suspicious object was reported on the Shore Road but when security forces attended they found nothing untoward.
The areas have all been reopened and residents have been allowed to return home.
The disruption comes amid a spate of security alerts across the city this week.
