The 18-year-old was left with swelling to her forehead following the assault, which happened at Tates Avenue at around 10pm on Saturday evening.

Police said the man was described as being approximately 5'7" tall, athletic build, short black hair and swarthy skin and wore a white hooded jacket, black jeans and white trainers with red flashes.

He made off in the direction of the Lisburn Road.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "It was reported that sometime around 10pm an 18-year-old female was walking along Tates Avenue when she was approached by an unknown male who attempted to kiss her before punching her in the face.

"The female suffered swelling to her forehead as a result of the incident."

Officers investigating the assault have asked anyone who witnessed it, or who has any further information, to contact them at Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

They are particularly keen to hear from a blonde haired woman who stopped with the girl a short time after the incident took place.
