The 47-year-old father of two was murdered after a night out in Ballynahinch last weekend.

Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of the Co Down village on Friday to pay their last respects, as the funeral procession made its way to Loughinisland parish church.

Devastated by their loss, the Mills family asked for privacy during the service but asked their minister to speak on their behalf.

"It has been a great shock to this community," said Stuart Burns.

"David is part of a very big and much liked and loved family who were part of this church. Today we're paying tribute to David as a family man, who loved his family."

Among the crowds gathered were members of the Northern Ireland footballing fraternity, including Portadown FC manager Ronnie McFall.

David Mills played for Portadown when they won their first Irish League Championship in 1990 - and lifted the double a year later.

A well-known sportsman locally, he was also a former player and manager of Drumaness Football Club and Drumaness Cricket Club.

Earlier this week a 30-year-old man appeared in court charged with Mr Mills' murder and is due in court again later this month.

Meanwhile the pain continues for the family, for whom Friday was a tremendously difficult day as they try to come to terms with the tragic circumstances surrounding the death.
