Fifth day of Lough Ree search ends

The fifth day of a search for a Co Armagh angler, who has been missing since his boat capsized in a Co Westmeath lough, has been called off due to the weather conditions.

30-year-old Daryl Burke from Portadown was fishing with two others when their boat capsized on Lough Ree, near Athlone, on Thursday afternoon.David Warnock, 27 and from Richhill, died after being rescued from the water.Hundreds attended his funeral on Monday afternoon at Mullaghbrack, near Markethill, Co Armagh.Friends from Portadown Pikers and his local hockey team carried his coffin into St John's Parish Church. He is survived by his fiancée and three-year-old son.A third man, in his 60s, is recovering in hospital having been in a critical condition. He gave information to the gardaí over the weekend, which has aided the search operation. The trio had set off for Carnagh from Hodson Bay on Thursday afternoon and were part of a group from a Co Armagh angling club, who had travelled to the area.It is understood they intended to camp in the Carnagh Bay area for the weekend and fish on the lake.Conditions were believed to be poor when the party of six set out in two boats, although one turned back to shore. At the weekend, more than 30 divers were involved in the operation alongside a number of local volunteers, including fishermen.Extra police divers from Dublin took part in Monday's search which began at around 11am, but was called off after four hours due to choppy waters and high winds.Damien Delaney, from RNLI Lough Ree Lifeboat Station, is co-ordinating the operation. On Monday morning, he said that the day's search would once again focus on Yew Point. He said that based on new information given to them, they felt the correct area is being searched.Mr Delaney added that they had eliminated a lot of ground over the weekend with the dive teams."It's a big area and it's a slow process because the visibility's not very good."The water's deep, but we feel we're in the right area and we're just extending the dive area today over to the west and south-west."Mr Delaney continued, saying that they had been overwhelmed by the support the search operation has received. He said that everyone involved was "very focused" on finding the missing man.
