They have been named locally as Colin and Hannah Doherty from the Castledawson area.

They died after the car they were travelling in collided with a cattle lorry on the Moneymore Road on Thursday at around 10.40pm.

Two others were injured in collision.

Fifteen-year-old Hannah was an aspiring journalist who had been writing for a local magazine.

She was a student in Form 5 at Rainey Endowed in the town, where the community is said to be "shocked and deeply saddened".

"She was a lovely girl, very lively," Principal Mark McCullough told UTV.

"She was really the life and soul of the school; she will be missed by everyone in the school community, in particular her year group and everyone connected with the Rainey."

A statement from the school said: "Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt sympathy are extended to Hannah's mother, brothers, grandparents and extended family at this very difficult time."

The school has cancelled all games fixtures on Saturday as well as a school disco on Tuesday as a mark of respect.

The Moneymore Road has reopened after being closed overnight.

Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident involving a white car and a red cattle lorry to come forward.

Four people have lost their lives in the Magherafelt district area in the past two weeks.

Mid Ulster DUP MLA Ian McCrea said: "That's something we just need to be more mindful of and aware of in the month of Christmas - and sadly, we have four homes who have empty chairs this Christmas."

Mid Ulster Sinn Féin MP, Martin McGuinness expressed his sympathy to the Doherty family.

"I'm sure they will be in the thoughts of many people. To lose two members of a family through a road traffic accident is always a tragic, sad occasion, it is especially more acutely felt at this time of year in the weeks before Christmas," he said.
