According to Reuters, both Irvine and the other man - Gabriele Moratti, the son of a former Milan mayor - were both found guilty on Thursday of "mutual injury" during the incident back in 2008.

Moratti received the same sentence, but it is thought that neither party will end up in jail.

Both men are set to appeal and, as the statute of limitations runs out at the end of 2015, the case will likely be declared null and void.

Italian media claim the fight was over a woman.

A lawyer for Moratti told Reuters: "It's easy for newspapers to say they fought because of jealousy over a woman, that they were two men who were rivals for her. It's a nice story.

"But in reality that's not the case."

Irvine raced for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar before retiring from Formula One.

Why should he get away with this because of his celebrity status? He should be sent to Italy to serve his prison sentence.
