A member of the public alerted police to £17,000 of herbal cannabis in Crossgar on Wednesday.

Officers attended the scene on the Listooder Road and recovered the drugs.

It comes after £10,000 of herbal cannabis was discovered in bins at the back of a house in the Meadowlands area of Downpatrick on 31 March.

No arrests were made in the operations but police said they are continuing to enquire.

Down Area Commander, Chief Inspector Deirdre Bones, said: "The potential harm to the public caused by drugs is something that we take very seriously and this is a substantial amount of suspected herbal cannabis that has now been taken off our streets.

"We know that the local community want us to tackle the issue of drugs and these recent seizures are further commitment of our determination to do so.

"I would like to thank the public for their continued support and would appeal to anyone who has any information in relation to illegal drugs, to contact local police on the new non-emergency number 101 or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

I'm not sure what potential harm this herb is likely to cause when there are now countless studies proving that it indeed has very real medicinal value. Where are the studies that prove harm?

27,000? so what is that 5 grams? We all know about the police history of inflating the price of the drugs they seize to give the impression that they aren't wasting our money on a pointless war. Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol and dependence should be treated as a medical issue, not a legal issue. Educate yourself people, learn that the "war on drugs" is political, not medical.

I absolutely despise seeing these articles. It's always about cannabis, yet I have rarely seen an article about raids finding large amounts of Class A. I do acknowledge the fact that a child could have found the cannabis in the bin and that it was obviously stashed their for sale etc. Time to get a law in place to regulate then there will be no need for shady dealers on the streets.
