Londonderry is getting ready to welcome the round the world Clipper Race.

VIDEO: The crew of the Derry~Londonderry~Doire set sail from New York - and battle against massive waves on their ocean journey.

The first of the 70-foot yachts are expected to dock on the Foyle on Monday following a 2,850-mile journey which began in New York earlier this month.

The race is currently being led by the city's own Derry~Londonderry~Doire crew, who have been battling their way across the Atlantic over the past couple of weeks.

The arrival of the 12 boats competing in the race comes as the centrepiece of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival, which kicks off on Saturday.

Visitors will get the chance to meet the crews at the Foyle Marina as part of a huge week of celebrations in the Maiden City.

Other highlights will include one of Derry's biggest ever combined local and continental markets, music events and arts and crafts, leading up to party finale next Saturday.

The clippers then set sail for the Netherlands on the next leg of their ocean journey.
