Police are investigating a report of criminal damage to a car belonging to DUP councillor Samuel Brush - which his party has said is the 39th attack on the representative.

The bonnet of his grey Nissan Micra parked at Main Street, Ballygawley was damaged in the early hours of Saturday.

Cllr Brush told UTV the noise of the incident disturbed him from his sleep at his home in the area.

"Unfortunately it's naked sectarianism, fuelled by alcohol," he commented.

"I'm the only person in the village that this is happening to."

Police would like to speak to two men who were outside licenced premises in the area at around 5am on Saturday, who might be able to assist police with their enquiries.

Cllr Brush was shot in an IRA gun attack in Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone, in 1981 while working as a UDR soldier and has since supported victims and survivors of terrorism.

The Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council representative received an MBE for services to the community in June.

Lord Maurice Morrow, DUP MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, has condemned those responsible for the damage which he said is another "act of intimidation" against Cllr Brush.

"Cllr Brush has yet again been subjected to an attack bringing the total to 39. He awoke on Saturday morning to find his car damaged in another act of intimidation carried out under the overnight cloak of darkness - the trademark tactic of cowards," Lord Morrow commented.

"It is a disgraceful to have to report this latest incident against Cllr Brush, who despite a despicable campaign of harassment and intimidation, stoically refuses to be cowed by the faceless thugs involved.

"It is equally disgraceful that after 39 attacks with not one single person has been detected for this deliberate, sectarian campaign."

He added: "I will be speaking with senior police to establish exactly what investigations and indeed, action has been taken to apprehend those responsible throughout this prolonged campaign."

Alliance Justice spokesperson Stewart Dickson called for the attacks on Cllr Brush to stop.

"There can be no justification for the campaign of attacks against Sammy Brush. My thoughts are with him and his family," the East Antrim MLA said.

"I am sickened by those who continue to target Sammy. Nobody should be subjected to such levels of sustained intimidation and violence.

"The perpetrators of these attacks on Sammy Brush must be brought to justice before the courts, so I would urge anybody with any information about these crimes to contact the police."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area at the time is asked to contact police in Dungannon on the non-emergency number 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Attacks such as this on anyone are simply wrong and the idiots that carry them out prove how thick they are when this is the most 'intelligent' challenge they can manage with someone they don't agree with.

Politicians should mind their words a bit more responsibly and also how they phrase things because they tend to forget that some people can be stirred up by inflammatory comments and take them as a call for action almost especially in the summer months..
