It happened at Donegall Mews, off the Donegall Road, on Tuesday evening.
The man, who is a foreign national and didn't want to appear on camera, said he was sitting at the dining room table when the shot was fired at around 8.50pm.
He said it narrowly missed his head before ending up in the kitchen, embedded in a toaster.
Neither the 42-year-old, who had just moved into the area in the past two weeks, or his friend were injured in the shooting. They have no idea why they were attacked.
Politicians and local people are shocked by what happened.
Christopher Stalford of the DUP said: "There can be absolutely no justification, and the people responsible for this attack have nothing to offer the community - the huge bulk of people who live in the area don't want this and want those responsible brought to justice."
Police are investigating all lines of inquiry and have appealed for anyone with more information to come forward by calling 0845 600 8000.
