The Action Cancer store was one of two charity shops burgled overnight on the Cregagh Road.

The Marie Curie Cancer Care store next door was also targeted.

Police have confirmed that a sum of cash was stolen from both properties.

A spokesperson for Action Cancer said: "The thieves gained access through an upstairs window at the back of the building by cutting the metal grill covering the window and smashing the glass.

"They proceeded to empty an upstairs and downstairs till, smash an Action Cancer piggy bank, take the money from the sweet donation box and cut open the safe.

"Approximately £150 was taken and considerable damage done to the premises."

A £30 till float was taken from the other store.

East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton said the good people of the area will be "utterly shocked and sickened" over the thefts.

He added: "It is absolutely disgusting that as volunteers give generously of their time to fund raise for charity thieves undo all the volunteers' good work by stealing the money and damaging property.

"I know many voluntary workers who spend hours working to help provide much needed money for local charities.

"The excellent work of these decent people stands in stark contrast to those who skulk in the dark to carry out their evil deeds."

Police would ask anyone who may have witnessed the robberies or who has any information to contact them.

HOW LOW CAN YOU STOOP? Hope when they are caught that the courts throw the book at them!
