The police have had to use CS spray to restrain a 14-year-old boy following an incident in Londonderry.

The teenager was arrested at premises on the Gransha Road on Tuesday afternoon.

He was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police confirmed that CS spray, generally used by officers to control aggressors in situations where lethal force is inappropriate, was used during the incident.

It can cause streaming eyes and a burning sensation.

Figures on the PSNI's use of the substance noted 479 cases in 2008/9, including 28 involving members of the public aged 17 and under.

The Police Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire, is investigating the incident.

His spokesman said: "The Police Ombudsman's Office is aware of an incident which took place on Tuesday during which police are alleged to have used CS spray on a 14-year-old boy.

"The matter is now being independently examined by investigators from the office."

The Ombudsman used to automatically examine the use of CS spray, but stopped doing so a few years ago.

Why is it so contraversial for a police officer to use CS spray when it is the least lethal option available to the officer. The baton is serious, punching the child would be violent but spray merely incapacitates the child for 20 or so minutes and there are no bruises.

if he had not be violent he would not have been spread, the police dont know if hes has a weapon or not? last week a police officer was attacked by a youth armed with a stanley bladed weapon.

Age has nothing to do with it... most 14 year old boys could be more than able to take on the feeble 5 foot midgets that are now allowed to enter the police service both male and female now that there is no longer a height requirement. as long as the 50/50 balance is is met, ability comes a poor second. The RUC never needed cs spray.

More proof as if any more were needed, regarding the total incompetence of the psni, from the chief constable, to the grassroots. Only an untrained animal would attack a child with pepperspray.
