UTV understands the bullet was sent to Tobermore Primary School in Magherafelt in a letter, along with a sympathy card.

Tobermore Primary said the letter did not target any child at the school.

The school said it would not be making any further comment on the matter.

It is believed the threat may have been racially motivated.

Mid Ulster MLA Ian McCrea said: "This is totally unnecessary and unwarranted.

"Regardless of the reasons behind this, I believe, anyone who receives that type of threat and the fact it went to a primary school shows the type of people that are behind this.

"This is not in any way acceptable and I condemn those responsible.

"It beggars belief that someone would send a bullet to a primary school," said the DUP representative.

Sinn Féin's Ian Milne branded the incident as "an absolute disgrace".

He said: "Those behind this threat should be ashamed of themselves.

"Schools should be a place of sanctuary and learning and young children should be protected from these types of attacks and threats.

"There are still those in the community who want to continually divide society, whether it is through religion or race, and the community needs to stand firm against these threats.

"I am calling on those behind the threat to cease their intimidation immediately and allow this family to live in peace," said the Mid Ulster Assembly member.

The police are investigating the incident.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police are aware of a letter sent to a primary school in Tobermore.

"While we do not discuss the security of individuals police, would never ignore anything that would put anyone at risk.

"Enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information that could assist police is asked to contact officers in Maghera on 0845 600 8000."

What sort of animals send this type of hateful thing to anyone, but to a school? , they are the festering dregs of the garbage truck.

I don't know what kind of header would even think this is a joke. Have they nothing better to be doing rather than threatening kids. I'd love to know what they thought this would accomplish.

I totally agree with the politicians comments, it is sick to send anyone a bullet in the post especially any school for that matter.
