Gardaí have said that his death was a tragic accident and that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the Hynes Building on Augustine Street, which houses the Social Welfare office, shortly after 3pm on Monday.

Fire service personnel and members of the ambulance service were in attendance, but it is understood that the little boy died at the scene.

The child, who was the only person injured in the incident, is believed to have become trapped in a gap below the lift floor as it came to a stop.

He had been in the building with family when it happened.

Police officers, fire crews and ambulance and paramedic staff attended the scene but were unable to save the boy's life. His body was taken away for a post-mortem.

The building has been closed while a full investigation is carried out.
