A six-year-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital after being shot in the neck in west Dublin, Gardaí say.

The shooting happened at Croftwood Gardens in the Ballyfermot suburb of the city shortly after 10pm on Friday.

Police say the boy received what is believed to be a gunshot wound to his neck. They do not believe he was the intended target and have said they are now following a definite line of enquiry.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to the boy's family.

Early reports suggest the child was injured after men pushed open the door of a house in the area and shot into the hallway. Gardaí say they administered first aid when they arrived at the scene.

He was rushed to Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin where he remains in a stable condition.

Police said a senior officer has been appointed to lead the investigation into the incident and the scene has been sealed off while inquiries take place.

They have appealed for those involved in the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "Gardai do not believe the child was the intended target of the shooting and are following a definite line of enquiry in relation to the shooting.

"A senior investigating officer has been appointed to this incident. Scenes are being technically examined by the Technical Bureau and extensive house-to-house enquires are being undertaken.

"Gardai in Ballyfermot are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Gardai in Ballyfermot on 01 6667200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
