The eight-year-old was hit by a vehicle on the Grosvenor Road close to the recreation centre at around 3pm on Tuesday.

An ambulance service spokesman said the child was rushed to hospital for treatment to head, leg and arm injuries.

On Tuesday night, a Belfast Trust spokeswoman confirmed that he remained in a critical condition in hospital.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash - involving a light coloured Honda CRV 4X4 type vehicle - to come forward.

Part of the Grosvenor Road was closed for a time. It re-opened in the evening.
