Officers were responding to what is believed to have been a hoax call in the Culmore Gardens area at around 7.30pm on Monday.

The device was thrown at a police land rover and did not explode.

Army bomb experts are at the scene and a number of people have been asked to leave their homes.

SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood said the residents are directly suffering as a result of the attack.

"This is an outrage that once again an area in west Belfast has been disrupted, the lives of local people have been disrupted by an alleged dissident attack.

"It's clear that the police were called in, lured into the area to investigate a burglary and that a device was then thrown at police. There's no support in west Belfast for this type of actions."

Ross Hussey, Ulster Unionist Policing Board member, said he was relieved that no one was injured in the attack.

"The terrorists who committed this crime offer no hope of a better future for anyone and only a one way ticket to prison. They must be rejected and handed over to the police," he said.

Mr Hussey, along with UUP colleagues Mike Nesbitt and Tom Elliott met with Chief Constable Matt Baggott on Monday to discuss the terrorist threat.

"This outrage committed tonight only further underlines the need to secure long term funding for the PSNI to combat the terrorists and to protect the community from their murderous intent," Mr Hussey added.
