Under cross-examination at Dungannon Crown Court on Thursday, Rachael Martin became emotional when questioned by the prosecution about a series of unexplained injuries suffered by Millie weeks before her death.

Ms Martin, who is from Main Street in Kesh, said she did not know anything was going on.

The 27-year-old admitted she now accepts changes in Millie's behaviour indicated the little girl was afraid but admitted she did not realise that at the time.

She told the court: "I didn't know I had a monster living in my house" and said McCarney portrayed himself as a loving father who had two children, who had experience and who appeared to care and love Millie.

She said she felt guilty for letting McCarney into her house and because of that she said: "I will have to live the rest of my life without my baby".

Continuing, Ms Martin said: "If that had triggered anything at all Millie would still be here," and went on to add, "Hindsight is a great thing, I wish I knew what was going on."

She said she only started putting things together after Millie was brought to the Royal Victoria Hospital in a lifeless state.

When asked, "Who in your mind did that?" Rachael Martin replied, "Mr McCarney."

Barry McCarney, 33, from Trillick denies murdering and sexually abusing Millie.

Rachael Martin has pleaded not guilty to neglecting and failing to protect her daughter.

The case continues.
