Lee Smyth was assaulted in a laneway beside a river at Ballinahone Avenue on Sunday, 6 June 2010.

Four men were arrested at the time of the incident but were later released.

Police have now issued a fresh appeal for information following his death on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector David McBurney said the attack on Mr Smyth as "a vicious assault."

He added: "Our thoughts are with Lee's family at this time who now have to deal with his death, after the trauma of his violent attack and subsequent medical condition.

"We believe that there are people in the local community who know what took place on the morning of 6 June, 2010. We believe they may have information which can assist our investigation and offer some type of closure for the Smyth family."

The victim's mother Mrs Emily Alexander said the attack on her son devastated her family.

"I am asking any person who knows anything about the brutal attack on Lee to come forward to police. Please share any information you have with them so that we can finally put our minds at rest and find those responsible."
