Arrest over Olympic boxer assault

Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin is recovering in hospital after his leg was broken in two places during a family dispute in his native Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Gardaí attended the scene of the dispute involving a number of individuals outside a house in the Ardleigh Crescent area of the town on Saturday at around 11.30am.A garda spokesman said that three people in their 20s, including Nevin, a man and a woman, were taken to Mullingar General Hospital for treatment to their injuries.A man in his 20s has been arrested and is being held at Mullingar Police Station.In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Nevin's promoters GreenBlood Boxing said the boxer will be "out of action for several months".The 25-year-old recently turned professional."John Joe is gutted that his pro career has been slowed by the attack but vows to come back stronger in the fall," the statement said."Doctors told Nevin he would be out for two or three months before he could start rehabilitation on the leg."According to the statement, the boxer was injured when trying "to act as a peacemaker" during the family dispute.He won the bantamweight silver for Team Ireland at the 2012 Olympics in London. He was a teammate of Belfast boxers Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan.
