Rare footage has emerged of a young Gerry Adams attending the funeral of an IRA man who was blown up by his own bomb.

The clip shows the Sinn Féin president, then aged 21, walking behind senior IRA figure Martin Meehan as the funeral cortege for Michael Kane passed through west Belfast in 1970.

Both men are dressed in black berets and wear dark gloves.

Gerry Adams, who has always strenuously denied being a member of the IRA, has previously been pictured wearing a beret at a separate funeral.

He also attended the 2008 funeral of senior IRA man Brendan Hughes and helped carry his coffin.

It later transpired that Brendan Hughes had made allegations against Mr Adams as part of the Boston College aural history project - including claims that he was involved in the murder of Jean McConville.

Mr Adams, now a Louth TD, has always denied any involvement in the 1972 disappearance and killing of the mother-of-10.

He was arrested by police investigating the murder, after voluntarily attending Antrim PSNI station on Wednesday evening by prior arrangement.

He is still being questioned, having been held overnight.

In an earlier statement, Mr Adams said: "While I have never disassociated myself from the IRA and I never will, I am innocent of any part in the abduction, killing or burial of Mrs McConville."

Both Hughes and Price have said that there was a listening devices in the davis flats that Adams was in the IRA. Are the authorities now saying that both of these people are lying about one statement and telling the truth about the other. Cant pick and choose.

Nearly as 'rare' as the photo of Peter 'Ulster Resistance' Robinson aiming a Kalashnikov. This really is low calibre journalism.

UTV have proven beyond any doubt that Gerry Adams was a Republican, which was (and maybe still is)a crime in many peoples eyes in this statelet
