The machine was ripped from the wall of the shop in the Pomeroy Road area of Donaghmore, causing substantial damage, at around 4am on Wednesday.

A heavy duty forklift was discovered close by on a road linking Donaghmore to Galbally.

Scattered nearby were tools and other equipment that may have been used by the thieves.

It is not yet known how much money was stolen.

Anyone with further information has been asked to get in touch with the police.

Local SDLP councillor Jim Cavanagh said: "This is a dreadful thing to have happened. This lawlessness has to be combated, not just by the police but the entire community.

"I am appealing to anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact police so these criminals can be brought to justice."
