It comes as part of the Bright Start School Age Childcare Grant Scheme which represents a £15m investment from the Northern Ireland Executive over the next three and a half years.

Up to 6,000 of the places will be newly created, with the children starting this autumn.

The places will be available in rural areas, areas of disadvantage and within the schools estate.

Junior Ministers Jennifer McCann and Jonathan Bell have welcomed Thursday's announcement as a big boost for the childcare sector.

Ms McCann, Sinn Féin, said: "There are currently 19 school age children for every registered school age childcare place available. The decision to create up to 6,000 new places and support existing places was informed by our consultation exercise on childcare services.

"Affordable, accessible, quality childcare services enable parents to work and to train for work improving a family's living standards and life chances. Good childcare services are an investment in both the present and the future."

Mr Bell, DUP, said: "We will create school age childcare services where there are currently none, or where there are currently not enough.

"This will provide a significant boost to our economy, giving parents assistance to take up work and directly creating about 750 new jobs in the childcare sector."

Stay at home and rear your children. If you wanted to go to work you should not have had them. Sick listening to this old chestnut about needing the money for this, that and the other. Spend less drinking, smoking and socializing and stop whinging.
