The singer left the competition after the final three contestants - Luke, Nicholas McDonald and Sam Bailey - performed live at Wembley Arena.

Speaking to host Dermot O'Leary after the result, Luke said: "People have always said I was the underdog of this competition, but I'm here and I am going to keep writing my music and I will keep performing.

"I've still got the X Factor tour coming up so that will be amazing."

Mentor Louis Walsh added: "He is such a unique act and I know he will have an amazing career. Watch this space!"

During the show, Luke performed a rendition of Fun's 2012 hit We Are Young for the audience.

"You have come such a long way," Sharon Osbourne told him.

Nicole Scherzinger added: "Luke you were like a baby rock star up there and you definitely bring the cool factor to this show."

You are in the final three for a reason, you have the potential to sell worldwide.

However despite it being the final, Gary Barlow told him his voice was not suited to the verses of the song.

But he added: "This competition is definitely better place with you in it."

Luke also had the opportunity to perform with chart superstar Ellie Goulding as the pair took to the stage with their guitars in hand for a rendition of Ellie's hit Anything Could Happen.

Ellie told Dermot afterwards she could learn a few things from Luke and she wanted him to go all the way in the competition.

Unfortunately the voting public did not agree and he left the X Factor to make way for Nicholas and Sam to battle it out for the 2013 title.

During the show Sam sang Lady GaGa's Edge of Glory for the audience, which prompted Gary to tell her: "I think this is your weekend."

"You sang the pants off that song," added Nicole. "You are definitely a force to be reckoned with."

That is how to use a song to showcase your voice.

Gary to Sam

Meanwhile Nicholas sang the Robbie Williams hit Candy with Sharon telling him: "That was so colourful and so bright, really well done."

But once again Gary criticised the performance and told him the song, which he wrote, did not suit his voice.

"We couldn't hear the strength in your voice," he said. "That song just did not showcase you voice."

While Nicholas later performed a duet of Flying Without Wings with former Westlife star Shane Filan, Nicole stepped out from the Judges desk to perform a show-stopping rendition of And I'm Telling You with Sam.

As well as performances from Tom Odell and The Killers, Wembley Arena was also treated to a special performance from some of the X Factor's most memorable contestants.

Rylan, Wagner, Jedward, Kitty Brucknell and Diva Fever were among the group who performed a medley of tunes in their own special way.

The public are now voting again for their X Factor favourite and either Sam or Nicholas will be crowned the 2013 winner during Sunday's final show.

The X Factor returns to UTV on Sunday from 7.30pm.

He sang the wrong songs on the last two shows. However, he will do well without the X factor show anyway.
