Van Morrison to play east Belfast gigs

Belfast blues singer Van Morrison is set to perform a special two night gig at his former school, Orangefield High in east Belfast.

The concerts are to celebrate the cultural significance of the school, which will close its doors in June.Van will play the two concerts on 22 August, which is specifically for the school's past pupils and teachers and 23 August, which is open to the public.Maurice Kincaid, from the Eastside Arts Festival, told UTV: "It (will be) a very intimate setting, about 400 people in total in the whole centre."This is back in his old stomping grounds in the school he was in and I think we are really looking forward to it."Already ...I have had phone calls, e-mails from Canada, the States, from Spain from London, from North of England all trying to find out how they can buy tickets and make sure they don't miss out on this unique occasion."I think Van Morrison playing here will put it on the World stage and make it a really interesting event, not just for overseas people but for local people as well."Tickets for the special two day event go on sale at 11am from Saturday 14 June, both online and from the Strand Art Centre.Van Morrison has won six Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and places in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.Queen's University and University of Ulster also bestowed him with honorary doctorates and he previously received an OBE for services to music.Last year he was honoured with the Freedom of the City award from the Belfast City Council.Van Morrison did actually sing about Orangefield school on No Guru, No Method, No Teacher.
