Twitter users have thrown their support behind Northern Ireland's Iain Watters after he was eliminated from The Great British Bake Off following an unfortunate dessert incident on Wednesday night.

The Belfast man, who now lives in England, went into meltdown after his Baked Alaska dissolved in front of him, prompting the construction manager to throw it into the bin and storm out of the Bake Off tent.

When it came to presenting his efforts to judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, Iain simply showed the pair the bin in which his dessert resided, leading to many viewers dubbing the incident "bingate".

But during Wednesday's show many Twitter users threw their support behind Iain, commenting that fellow contestant Diana Beard had contributed to Iain's exit as she had taken his Baked Alaska out of the freezer, causing the ice cream inside to melt.

In true Twitter fashion #justiceforiain was trending worldwide as users amusingly posted their thoughts on the matter.

"I didn't sleep well at all last night because i was so upset about the great British bake off #justiceforiain," posted one viewer.

Another added: "#justiceforiain I don't think people have been this livid about a TV show since #freedeirdre"

The show's presenter Sue Perkins has since defended Beard, tweeting: "Iain's Alaska was out of the freezer for 40 secs. That's it. No sabotage. 40 secs of normal temp would NOT be enough to reduce it to liquid."

She continued: "I can't actually believe I'm wading into this... (And wading is the operative word...) Big love to @iain_watters anyhow. What a gent x

"All getting a little inflamed for my liking. Am off. This is a show about CAKES. Please, let's save the ire for real stuff. Peace & out x"

Paul added: "At the end of the day Mary & I need something to judge, it's not about melted ice cream but about what's presented to US... #bingate

But Iain himself was gracious in defeat, tweeting: "THANK YOU @BritishBakeOff it's been truly EPIC. What can I say guys - I had a #MELTDOWN. Thanks for the support. #BINCIDENT #GBBO".

Beard has also responded to the accusations, claiming she has been "stitched up" as the show had been edited to make it look as though she deliberately sabotaged her rival's chances.

She said: "We were 12 amateur bakers, no prize money involved. Why would I want to sabotage Iain's Baked Alaska? I was very pleased to get through the first week - everything after that was a bonus.

"Iain does not hold me responsible at all for his failed ice cream. In fact, he rang me three days ago to warn me that the knives were out".

Meanwhile show bosses revealed on Thursday that Beard has in fact left the show after she "fell ill".

Producers were keen to highlight that her exit is unrelated to the controversy involving Watters.

A BBC statement said: "Diana will not appear in the rest of the series as she fell ill ahead of filming episode five earlier this year."
