Meanwhile 3% of those surveyed claim they have been abducted by aliens.
On the This Morning sofa today two people shared their experiences with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby and are adamant that we are not alone in the universe.
Hilary Porter was just two years old when she claims she was first taken by aliens.
"I went missing from my garden, my parents would always make sure I wouldn't be able to get out, but I used to go missing, my mother would have to come and find me," she said.
"When I was tiny, these robed figures used to come into my bedroom and they would put a cinema screen on the wall and they would show me strange images and I was so young I really couldn't understand."
Hilary claims that she was abducted as recently as January and it was not a pleasant experience.
"I had a crisis abduction where I came back very badly bruised and I was feeling extremely ill and by that evening I started getting flashbacks of things that had happened.
"I had the most excruciating bruising. They took me abroad their craft; I don't have much memory of what they actually do," she explained.
With many conspiracy theories about what exactly aliens want with us humans, Hilary has her own theory.
"They're making hybrids," she said.
"They've been doing this for decades but they've had to keep working on them."
Tony Topping also claims to have been visited by other worldly figures.
"At the age of two I have a vivid recollection of it, which is shocking; it shocks me that I can clearly remember what is going on," he explained.
"They weren't aliens; they were just two people walking through a wall. I was fully awake when that happened.
I know there are people in the aerospace and defence industries that are having intelligent interaction with aliens.
Tony Topping, abductee
"None of it is related to being asleep, all of it is related to actual physical interaction with objects and seeing them and filming then and at times it's been absolutely hair raising."
Many would argue that if there were aliens among us, there would surely be evidence to back it up.
Tony believes there are people in the know.
"I've done research and I know there are people in the aerospace and defence industries that are having intelligent interaction with aliens but are keeping it out of the public domain," he said.
For every believer there is a sceptic and Psychologist Professor Christopher French argues that there are explanations for these experiences.
"The idea that we could remember something at the age of two we should treat that with extreme caution. If you can see yourself in the scene then clearly that's a false memory," he added.
All of the experiences that they've had strike me as being very likely to be related to sleep disturbances.
Professor Christopher French
"Sleep paralysis is a very, very common phenomenon, people wake up, they see things that aren't there, and they hear things that aren't there," he added.
Yet Professor French is not completely closed to the idea of aliens among us.
"Logically it's totally possible. Most scientists would say yes there's probably life out there, it seems very, very likely.
"Whether or not they're making contact with us on a regular basis - that is the question and the evidence there just isn't convincing."
