The couple tied the knot during a private ceremony attended by friends and family at the Chateau Miraval in France on Saturday.

In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie obtained a marriage licence from a local California judge, who also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple's children took part in the wedding. The actress walked down the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax, while daughters Zahara and Vivienne threw petals. Their remaining offspring, Shiloh and Knox, served as ring bearers, the spokesman said.

The A-listers finally tied the knot after months of rumours about their nuptials.

Brad said previously of getting hitched: "I am getting more pressure from my kids, and it is something I want to do within their lifetime, but I also feel like the time has come."

The couple met in 2005 when they starred together in the film Mr and Mrs Smith. They announced their engagement in April 2012.

Pitt was previously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston, while Jolie was previously married to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.

The couple's announcment comes as Pitt flashed his wedding ring at a press launch for his new film Fury in Dorset, England on Thursday.

The 50-year-old Oscar winner posed for pictures at the event alongside Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal and David Ayer, writer, director and producer for the film.

Pitt was photographed wearing a gold ring on his wedding finger.
