For weeks David has lived in a state of guilt and fear as it was his actions that caused the horrific crash which put Nick in the hospital.
Despite his wife Kylie's one night stand with Nick, David is determined to continue playing happy families following the arrival of their daughter, but, as actor Jack P Shepherd revealed, it could all come crashing down for the Platts.
"With Nick being in his coma David is treading on eggs shells a little bit," explained Jack in behind-the-scenes footage.
"He is trying to keep his spirits up around the family, talking about how Nick is going to pull through and everything is going to be great, but underneath he is worried about when Nick finally does wake up and what is he going to say."
The inevitable happens as Nick slowly begins to show signs of coming around, and David must decide his next plan of action.
Jack revealed: "Everyday it seems there is more progress with Nick's situation and he starts to wake up from his coma.
"David wants to be the first one in the room with him so he can weigh up whether Nick remembers anything, what he remembers and, more importantly, if he remembers it was David who caused the crash."
And when Nick eventually becomes more conscious, David jumps into action.
"He tries to get Nick on his own when he finally does sort of come round and he feeds him a bit of a lie," said Jack.
"He tries to tell him how the accident happened and how no one was to blame - but (Nick's wife) Leanne is listening at the doorway.
"So now that Leanne has walked in and seems to have uncovered a little bit of David's plan, will he be able to worm his way out of it or will he get sussed that he caused the crash?"
Coronation Street is on UTV on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7.30pm.
