Original sci-fi costumes in NI auction

More than 1,000 pieces of rare science-fiction memorabilia, which were confiscated by police from a criminal couple in England, will go under the hammer in Northern Ireland on Friday.

The unique collection features actual costumes used in the Star Trek films, including Scotty's jacket, as well as a replica Millennium Falcon from Star Wars and remote control Daleks from Doctor Who.The items once belonged to a husband and wife from West Yorkshire who built up their collection from money stolen from the laundry equipment firm where the 55-year-old woman was employed. She pleaded guilty in December to stealing £2.3m from the company between 2005 and 2012, while her 48-year-old husband admitted laundering £924,190 of the stolen funds. As well as indulging in their passion for sci-fi, the couple also bought a £500k house, spent almost £194k on holidays and over £85k on a Mercedes car each.Wilsons Auctions in Mallusk is putting the collectables up for sale with no reserve price on instructions from West Yorkshire Police.Aidan Larkin, assets recovery manager at Wilsons, said the auction presented a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for sci-fi fans."These items come round very, very rarely," he said."It's rare for such a large, significant collection of these items to become available. Normally at the specialist toy auctions there are one or two items of a certain range - we have complete waves of toys that were produced."Mr Larkin, who said he expected a lot of online bids from the US, said the set of six Star Trek costumes were probably the most valuable items for sale."We have been informed when the costumes last changed hands in Christie's Auctions in New York a few years ago the couple in question spent 27,000 US dollars on these costumes," he said. The auction gets under way at 6.30pm.What to wear, what to wear...
