The Manchester United fan was parading his Claret Jug ahead of Saturday's season opener against Swansea, but his choice of attire - a flashy, checked suit - raised some eyebrows.
Fellow golfer Ian Poulter, known for his own daring style choices, took to Twitter to point out that the suit looked a little familiar, but world number one McIlroy was quick to set the record straight.
Holywood man McIlroy picked up the third major of his career at Royal Liverpool in July when he won his first Open Championship, before following it up in August by lifting the US PGA title.
His ribbing from Poulter didn't end with the suit though.
The red socks also came under fire, as did the performance of his beloved Man United - with the team not faring too well in their first game of the new season, which was also their first under new manager Louis Van Gaal.
According to Poulter, McIlroy's trophies will be "the only trophies that will be paraded at Old Trafford this season ..."
