McIlroy hits back at Poulter over suit

Twitter banter ensued after Ian Poulter made some observations about the suit Rory McIlroy wore at Old Trafford over the weekend.

The Manchester United fan was parading his Claret Jug ahead of Saturday's season opener against Swansea, but his choice of attire - a flashy, checked suit - raised some eyebrows.Hey you can keep your Claret Jug but can I have my suit back please Mr @McIlroyRory I thought something was missing.— Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) August 16, 2014Fellow golfer Ian Poulter, known for his own daring style choices, took to Twitter to point out that the suit looked a little familiar, but world number one McIlroy was quick to set the record straight. And the red socks? @McIlroyRory Sorry @IanJamesPoulteryou must be mistaken.. this suit was only available with the claret jug!— Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) August 16, 2014Holywood man McIlroy picked up the third major of his career at Royal Liverpool in July when he won his first Open Championship, before following it up in August by lifting the US PGA title. His ribbing from Poulter didn't end with the suit though.@IanJamesPoulter what? These red socks?— Rory Mcilroy (@McIlroyRory) August 16, 2014The red socks also came under fire, as did the performance of his beloved Man United - with the team not faring too well in their first game of the new season, which was also their first under new manager Louis Van Gaal.According to Poulter, McIlroy's trophies will be "the only trophies that will be paraded at Old Trafford this season ..." Fighting talk!@IanJamesPoulter had my shin pads on underneath but never got the call up...— Rory Mcilroy (@McIlroyRory) August 16, 2014
