Battle lines have been drawn in Emmerdale this week as Kerry Wyatt and Val Pollard go to war over their Christmas decorations, but as actress Laura Norton has revealed, there may be more to the dispute than the quest for better lights.

Both Kerry and Val are still dealing with the aftermath of Amy's departure from the Dales and trying to come to terms with the loss they feel in the run up to Christmas.

And when they each receive a letter from Amy, the women are left feeling they both have something to prove.

As Kerry is Amy's birth mother but Val took care of her, both are staking a claim as to who really was Amy's mum, and have found the perfect way to one up each other with a festive competition.

"It's been very difficult for Kerry," said Laura. "She's had her heart broken. She finally managed to build some bridges and form some bonds and she's lost her again, so I think she is feeling quite floored.

"So it has been very difficult because the one thing she has been missing for such a long time and got back in her life and she has lost her again.

"I think she is struggling quite a bit, but she puts on a brave face as ever."

Let's just say the fight is on and I think I know who is going to win. I won't say too much, but it's not Val.

Kerry and Val were never on the best of terms when Amy was around, so her absence, and their attempts to deal with her departure, add fuel to the fire of their stormy relationship.

"There's a lot to be said for Kerry's relationship with Val. I think if they could and if either of them had the courage to, the absolutely would knock each other out," joked Laura.

"Kerry is looking forward to Christmas because it is a huge distraction from the fact that it's gonna be a Christmas without Amy.

"It's supposed to be something where I think they are both trying to be creative and enjoy Christmas, but underneath they are both grieving and I think it's a deflection for what is really going on.

"And what transpires is that they absolutely want to tear each other's hair out.

"So war is on and I think Val is going to be crying into her Christmas pudding."

Emmerdale airs on UTV weekdays from 7pm.
