The Belfast-born actor, who played Bert Lynch in Z-Cars, died from a stroke in Lincoln Hospital earlier this month. He was 82.

Friends and family will be joined by stars of the stage and screen for a service of thanksgiving at St Mark's Church, Dundela, at midday this Friday.

After the service there will be a cortege route through Belfast, a private burial at a separate site and then a wake in central Belfast for invited guests.

Bishop John McDowell will lead the service.

James Ellis became a familiar face through his role in the police drama, which was a household favourite from 1962 to 1978.

He played alongside a young Kenneth Branagh in BBC Northern Ireland's 'Billy' plays and also starred in programmes such as Doctor Who, In Sickness And In Health, Ballykissangel and Only Fools And Horses.

Sir Kenneth Branagh has paid tribute to Jimmy, saying: "I was blessed to begin my career working with him, and I will never forget his generosity to me.

"He was a highly intelligent, funny, and kind man, and a tremendous actor. He will be deeply missed by all his colleagues on screen and on stage."

A special programme about Jimmy Ellis will be broadcast on UTV at 10.35pm on Friday.
