An ambulance was called for the 24-year-old, but a medical crew checked him over and decided he didn't need to go to hospital.
James won the praise of judges for his performance of Mary J Blige's No More Drama, with Louis Walsh speculating that a record deal could be on the cards.
But the singer said his emotional presence could have contributed to his ill health.
"I had an anxiety attack last night, maybe because I gave everything I had to my performance," James explained.
He missed out on appearing on the Xtra Factor, tweeting presenter Caroline Flack that he "wasn't in a good place". Instead, James had been taken back to his hotel where he was told to take it easy.
But after a good night's sleep, he has bounced back for Sunday's performance and said "there's no way I'm missing it".
An X Factor spokesman said: "An ambulance was called as a precaution but he was not taken to hospital and he will appear on tonight's show.
"The welfare of contestants is our key priority and we work with them to provide any support that is needed."
