Pop duo Jedward were left "badly shaken" after they had to be rescued when they became trapped on a sandbank in Dublin on Wednesday morning.

John and Edward Grimes - who found fame on The X Factor in 2009 - were walking along a beach near Malahide with their cousin when they got into difficulty.

The alarm was raised by the boys' mother, Susanna Grimes, at around 11pm on Tuesday night after her sons contacted her, worried about the rising tide.

The Skerries coastguard was deployed to the scene, while a rescue helicopter used a search light to try and locate the twins.

The ten-man coastguard team waded through up to six-feet of water to come to their rescue.

Ms Grimes said her sons were left "very badly shaken" and they later admitted the incident could have ended in tragedy.

John, 22, told the Irish Sun: "What we want to get across is how quickly this all happened. This got out of hand before we even realised.

"We would urge young people to be very careful around water and the sea. This could have been a tragedy but for the good work of the coastguard."
