Troubled musician Pete Doherty is desperate to quit drugs after realising they have wrecked his rock career, confessing: "My life is a real mess."

Drugs left Doherty's life 'in tatters'

The singer and his The Libertines bandmate Carl Barat were touted as rock's great new writers when they hit the music scene in 2002 with their debut album Up the Bracket.

Despite gaining a cult following among fans, the band split in 2004, and Doherty's talents have since been overshadowed by his addiction issues and shambolic performances.

The 35-year-old has undergone treatment on several occasions to get clean, all of which have failed, and now he has admitted drugs have ruined his life.

He said: "I would like to get rid of the damn drugs. It's no longer fun. On the contrary, it's just s**t and kills all my creativity. But it's difficult to stop. My past life is a f**king mess, a real mess.

"It's gone wrong in so many ways. Although I don't believe in regrets - 'cause that offers nothing - but clearly some things I would like to change. I wish I had better contact with my family. I have caused so much c**p."

Doherty will reunite with Barat when The Libertines play the British Summer Time Hyde Park event in London on 5 July, marking their first performance together in four years.
