He explained to Phillip and Holly: "It looked terribly glamorous and I even walked in (to camp) thinking "oh, this is lush".
"I genuinely thought it was a bit more like a movie rather than real.
"So the first day they give you your kit and then your sleeping bag, and you have to sleep on the floor, and I thought "well there's enough now, (the crew have) got enough footage, can't they just go away or can't they just stop".
"And they wouldn't talk to you, so you would have no contact with anybody other than the campmates."
During his three weeks in the jungle David shed two stone in weight, which is not surprising considering the little food the celebrities receive.
But again this was something David was not expecting.
"I also thought "where are the bacon sandwiches, when are they gonna roll out some food?"
"It literally was a mug and a half of rice all day.
"It was really hard work, it was tough."
The fashion designer came second to former Westlife singer Kian Egan as he was loved both by the viewers and his fellow campmates for his easygoing and diplomatic nature.
However he admitted that this is due to years of training.
He said: "Don't forget that for thirty years I have looked after divas and ladies and I think in a way perhaps that was a good background because you see warts and all."
Spending his time in the jungle, with no hot water, limited food and uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, David happily revealed his actions as soon as he left the camp.
"I raced back to the hotel and stayed in the shower for 30 minutes because I stunk," he explained.
"Then I had a glass of champagne which of course makes you completely giddy because you haven't drunk anything (for three weeks)."
