On Friday, viewers watched as Hayley, who has terminal pancreatic cancer, told Roy what she plans to do when her condition worsens.
He listened in utter disbelief as she did her best to explain to him the reasons for her decision.
"It doesn't have to be pain or oblivion," Hayley explained. "I've decided I won't let the cancer ruin how and when I die. I want to die when I'm still Hayley. I'm going to end my life when I choose."
But Roy will struggle with Hayley's choice in the weeks ahead.
"They are so in love. He wants her to be on this planet for as long as possible and she wants to take control. He thinks life is for life and you live it through", actor David Neilson explained.
It is not the first controversial storyline which the long-serving Corrie actors have had to portray in nearly 16 years as a couple.
Julie Hesmondhalgh started to play Hayley in 1998 when she became the first transgender character on UK television.
"I was only supposed to come in for a few episodes - the first of many unsuccessful dates for Roy.
"We've never been a conventional couple and this is a new aspect to it," she told UTV.
The storyline was developed after Julie announced she had made the decision to leave the soap, paving the way for the show's writers to create a dramatic and touching exit for her character.
Coronation Street Producer Stuart Blackburn said: "I would never have done that by choice. It was one of the first phone calls I had when I took over at Corrie, from Julie who said she wanted to leave. My first question was: 'Do you think you're going to want to come back?' She said no. And from then on the decision was easy because she would never leave Roy."
The show makers say they have been working closely with charities, including Pancreatic Cancer UK, to develop the storyline into the New Year.
Earlier this week viewers saw the couple take a romantic trip to Blackpool where Hayley fulfilled her dream of dancing in the world famous Tower Ballroom.
"It's been some ride," the actress said.
The heartbreaking scenes were aired as an exclusive preview of the drama coming to your screens this autumn was released.
It includes the fallout from the Christening revelations, the return of Todd Grimshaw and the first signs that Tina McIntyre and Peter Barlow are set to embark on an affair.
