The Irish actor got into the mindset of factory worker/spy Douglas Quaid, the role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 original, by spending a night in the character's bed.
Farrell slept on the set with just his iPod music player, some books, candles, incense and a pot of green tea, and joked about the stunt by telling The Hollywood Reporter: "I just couldn't find the key for my hotel room."
He adds: "You do anything really, at times - that's not even doing much. But just any little bits and pieces just to create little bubbles of experience."
