Excited devotees waited for up to 30 hours and even slept on the street outside an HMV record store in a bid to catch a glimpse of former The X Factor judge Cole.

Hysteria ensued when organisers announced only the first 500 fans to arrive would be allowed in the shop to meet their idol and receive a signed copy of the Girls Aloud star's latest solo album A Million Lights.

Ahead of the event, Cole took to her Twitter.com page, writing, "I hear some of you are camping out already in Newcastle... I hope your (sic) all good!! Stay safe. I'm on my way."

After the signing, Cole paid tribute to her devoted following, writing, "Thanks (sic) you so much for an amazing welcome home!! I loved meeting you all!! Can't wait to see you on tour."
